<idAbs>Statewide elevation contour lines (10-ft intervals) derived from a digital elevation model originally produced as part of the Northeast LiDAR Project in 2011.</idAbs>
<idPurp>Transportation planners and consultants in Rhode Island need ready access to accurate geospatial data to assist in the development of plans and bids for construction projects. These same data are of prime importance in evaluating the potential impacts of climate change, including the vulnerability of existing infrastructure to environmental hazards and sea level rise. Complete, accurate, and consistent high resolution elevation data is a key geospatial data layer used in these applications, yet these data remain largely inaccessible by the user community due to unique file structures and large file sizes.</idPurp>

<suppInfo>2010 saw the beginning of The Northeast Multiphase LiDAR Project.A cross the region, the same problems were being addressed – the almost total lack of contiguous, consistent, high-resolution elevation data. Coordinated by the USGS with representatives from each of the participating states, this work sought to collect seamless LiDAR data for all of the coastal counties between New York and Maine. With accuracies 25 – 100 times better than what is currently available for much of Rhode Island, a contiguous and consistent elevation dataset derived from this new data collection initiative will facilitate a number of statewide applications including transportation planning, floodplain mapping, and hazard mitigation. As part of this project, the contractor delivered to the State of Rhode Island raw and classified LiDAR points along with a hydro-flattened 1m digital elevation model (DEM).</suppInfo>

<stepDesc>A smoothed elevation surface was created using the “FocalMean” command in ArcGIS 10.1. A circular neighborhood was used with a radius of 5 pixels (16.41 feet). All contours were developed using this smoothed surface at a two foot interval. All "zero" elevation contour lines were deleted since they do not indicate sea level and inaccurately depict the coastline, discouraging misue of these data. The contour line dataset was finally clipped to the RIGIS 1:5000 scale "State, Coastline, Town Boundaries" dataset, effectively removing erroneous contour lines that extended into marine water bodies.</stepDesc>
