Description: A combination of sources were consulted to complete this project. The base layer was compiled by RIDOT as an inventory of existing rail lines. All Active and Inactive lines began as part of this layer. To deepen the field geographically and historically a map entitled "Railroad Map of Rhode Island, Prepared for the Railroad Commissioner, 1909" was copied, scanned, and geolocated using listed villiage locations. In consultation with this data, as well as Aerials flown in 1939 (available at http://mapper.provplan.org/ha/), and topo maps from a variety of dates but primarily from 1921 (available online at http://www.historicaerials.com/), Planning Division researchers attempted to trace historic rights of way in modern aerials that were flown in 2005. Many Rights of Way for trolley lines followed roadways, and in those instances modern road layers, such as the e911 layer available on RIGIS, were used as an acceptable facimile of the historic roadways. Lines were not drawn without evidence in two or more of the listed sources, but as no survey maps were consulted the actual locations listed should not be considered as anything more than a best guess for informational purposes.Attributes were filled for the purposes of the Planning Division using a combination of internal data, historic rail plans, and "Railroads of Rhode Island" by Frank Hepp
